Blog/How A 27 yo Boy Started Learning Korean, Moved to Korea and Mastered Korean Within 2 Years

4 years ago I discovered my passion for Korea while coming across K-Pop. I remember it like it was yesterday ago when “BTS – On” was in the YouTube Trends and I accidentally clicked on it. I mean looking back to it, no one would have imagined that a mouseclick would result in me moving to Korea and living the best time of my life.

It felt like loving Korea was always hidden inside my genes but it needed a trigger to be released, which was K-Pop for me. Whatever your trigger was: Keep reading. We may share different stories but our goal is the same: Mastering Korean.

Very quickly after that I started long distance dating with Koreans using Tinder World pass. What can I say. The dating culture had a magic effect on me and kinda made addicted to Korea (I am still addicted today). About one year later I started watching K-Drama and another year later with learning Korean.

2023 my dream finally came true and I was able to travel to Korea which was better than I ever expected. I loved it so much that half a year later I eventually moved to Korea and while you are reading these words I am sitting in Seoul having the best time of my life.

Everyone kept asking me what I like about Korea and my honest answer was “everything” but that didn’t satisfy them so I started creating a list of everything I liked, which contained over 20 items including food, clubs, fashion, skincare, dogs … well just everything (you see, I am not lying with that ^^).

The scariest thing was that even before I knew Korea I was passionated about MBTI and when I heard that Koreans are crazy about MBTI I was like: My soulmates. It’s crazy. (If we ever met, ask me about my MBTI).

Back then only one thing really sucked: That I wasn’t able to hold Korean Conversations on my travel journey. So since then I spent all of my energy on finding the best strategy in learning Korean and honestly if hadn’t loved Korea so much I would have given up learning Korean since a long time.

But that love kept me going, even tho it was damn hard. And naturally when you love something deep from your heart and continue with it, you will find a solution. So my foreigner friends started envying me how I was able to learn Korean so quickly and my answer is always the same: “self study”.

I never ever sat inside a Korean Language class, nor have I ever scheduled one lesson with a Korean teacher. And its not because I couldn’t afford it, its just because I believe that self-study is the most effective way of learning Korean. Also I am a businessman, its just natural for me that I chose the things I spent my time on very wisely.

So when it comes to learning Korean its not about doing just “anything” its about doing the “right thing”. Because if you use the wrong strategy, learning Korean will feel dry you so much out that you will lose your initial motivation and stop learning it altogether.

I mean that’s basically true for everything that you start, but its even more true for learning a language because it really takes a huge amount of time to learn it. Studies have showed that it takes around 2200h to master Korean for a westerner (as a comparison, learning Spanish would take you 600h).

Speaking in numbers we can safely say learning Korean is 3-4 times as hard as learning a western language like French, Spanish, German whatsoever. So if its so damn hard why would a normal person do all of that to themselves?

It’s the same with the question: “Why would someone move to Korea?”. My answer is: Love. If it was about money no normal person would learn Korean or move to Korea. But not surprisingly money wasn’t important to me. I just wanted to be happy and I was ready to go through everything that it takes.

Coming to Korea was really tough at the beginning. If you reduce the number of people who are willing to be friended with a foreigner I would go for like 10% from my experience. And the reason is not that they aren’t interested into foreigners, in fact the are very interested into foreigners, its just that they have the alternative to have friends speaking Korean and naturally people fall back to their comfort zone.

It was really fascinating for me to go through this process and observe nature about what’s going on in the minds of Korean people and why it sometimes felt so easy but sometimes so difficult. The truth is that Korean usually have their friends already, because they grew up in Korea so they spent all of their life in building their friend circle.

But the good news is: its not impossible, its just needs a bit more digging and the most important part is speaking Korean, at least a little bit. Because best practice is to start a conversation in Korean, so they would realize that you aren’t perfect in Korean either so they would feel comfortable in open up with speaking English.

That’s why I took all my research and interviews with Korean Language Learners to refine the best strategy in learning Korean, that I call the “Korean Alchemy” today. In order to learn the Korean alchemy all you have to do is to watch this short video I prepared for you: https://www.realkoreanconversations.com/video

In this video you will learn how to accelerate your Korean Learning progress immediately and forever. Learning Korean will be fun, you will continuously see your improvements which your brain will reward with dopamine, the one crucial thing that we need to keep going.

Because if you feel like your motivation is drifting away, there’s nothing wrong about you. Its just natural. BUT, you need a system that continuously rewards you for all the hard work you have done and for an average person its not possible to see their improvements.

Therefore we will create a system that exactly tells you where you stand right now and where to go next. You just need to follow this simple formular I created for myself and that I am ready to share with you today.

Seriously this strategy is the result of all my love that I felt and still feel for Korea. Originally I created it for myself because I wanted to become fluent in Korean as fast as possible, and in contrast to how our economy works there’s no reason why I cant give it to other people, in fact I see my fellow Korean Lovers as my friends that I want to help with everything that I can …
